The Online Classroom

Richard C. Ross

Richard RossI attained a B.A. from DePauw University (Greencastle, IN) in 1972 and a Masters from the same school in 1974. Twenty-four of my twenty-five years in education were spent teaching at Kaneland High School in Maple Park, Illinois. There I taught Physics I and Physics II (a course which I designed and wrote the curriculum), Algebra, Geometry, Earth Science, Physical Science, a General Science survey course and a computer-based Technology lab class. After school, I coached football for three years and then golf for nineteen. I also have a successful small business designing websites and creating Internet advertising.

My first love though, has always been teaching. While still in high school, I taught swimming lessons at the local community pool and also summer camp at Mooseheart (a residential childcare facility and home for children and teens in need) in Batavia, Illinois. I have even spent some time teaching basic cooking skills... After retiring from Kaneland, I went back and did substitute teaching for several years. But I yearned to have my own classroom again. The opportunity to develop an interactive online classroom seemed like a natural solution; it would be an outgrowth of my combined backgrounds in the high school classroom and in front of the computer.

As is always the case when someone does online research, an important aspect to consider is the validity and the reliability of any claims made. In order for you to develop confidence in me and my ability to teach effectively, I invite you to check any/all of my references; their names and contact information where available, are included below. I look forward to gaining your trust, and helping your child attain the level of expertise that they desire.

From Colleagues:

"I had the pleasure to work with Richard Ross for many years as a fellow science teacher. He was a favorite amongst students and staff. Students were always excited to take Mr. Ross's physics class because he made it not only educational but interesting and exciting. Any student would be lucky to have him as a teacher. And now they can. I am very interested in technology in the education world. This seems like a fantastic way to get help outside the classroom from an experienced veteran! What a great idea." JRO
“I’ve known Rich Ross, as a physics teacher at Kaneland High School, for 13 years. I find Mr. Ross to be a committed, compassionate, and determined educator who always took his job as a teacher beyond the workday. Mr. Ross not only taught the concepts of Physics, but also taught students to have a passion for science. Mr. Ross can take a difficulty concept and explain it with ease and fun to every student. He is truly a remarkable science teacher.”    CV

From Former Students:

“… we have all learned so much from your class. Not just science. We’ve learned patience, respect, and most importantly, what a rhetorical question is. We all have a lot of respect for you, especially because of everything you have done for us. Think of us as the class that made it. If it weren’t for your patience, your tolerance, and all the times you gave and gave and we just took more, none of us would have made it to where we are today. Thank you so much!” From a 9th grade Physical Science class

From Parents:

"I’ve known Mr. Ross, a physics teacher at Kaneland High School, for a number of years both as a colleague and as a teacher of my daughters. Both girls have been very successful in physics as a result of Mr. Ross’s teaching and encouragement. He brings “life” to science. He imparts knowledge from the textbook to students, then allows them the opportunity to problem-solve, a life-skill that everyone needs to develop for future learning... Mr. Ross is one of the best in his profession” J.B.

From Administration:

I have known Richard Ross for over 20 years. He was a positive, contributing and valued member of the Kaneland High School staff during his tenure in Kaneland District 302. We have stayed in contact since his retirement and he remains a very good friend to this day. Richard is a very competent professional whose strength is working well with students. While he was at Kaneland, he exhibited true care and concern for his students and went above and beyond in helping them to understand all aspects of science. He was able to convey his love and knowledge of science to his students in a way that held their interest. What an amazing resource he would be for any student needing help in science!
Sincerely,
MES
